After M. Richard Mellon’s tour of the property earlier this month following his down payment of $2 million to purchase the parcel from the Ehrenfeld Companies, it was announced yesterday that the $3.3 million sale is now final. The Erie Times News reports they received an email from Mellon stating:
“As of 10:23 (a.m.) today, we own it. Get the word out. We want our veterans to know (we) have a place for them.”
This ends the tumultuous period of ownership with its prior owner, the Ehrenfeld Companies, which began with a hopeful start, the renaming of the former Mercyhurst campus to Granite Ridge, talk of a multitude of possible uses for portions of the property, before the suggestion it would be turned into a migrant detention center and relations between its owners and the North East community fell apart.
The apartments were recently sold to Pero Real Estate and Brick and Mortar Property Management for $4 million after being subdivided into a separate property and now the main buildings and all of the remaining property are in the hands of someone who has a vision with great promise for veterans and the entire North East community.
Mellon’s plans to turn the facility into a veterans outreach and wellness center is great news for veterans and with the foundation’s ownership should finally settle the issue of what would become of this wonderful gem in the center of North East. There’s much to be done, but the future is looking bright.
