As noted the other day, the Mellon Heritage website was offline. It is now updated with a whole new look and is back online to serve veterans and first responders. Be sure to check it out at https://mellonheritage.org/
Interested in making models?
Fellow veteran Dan MacMillan has been a model builder for a long time with a great many military models on display at the Mellon Veterans Outreach Center.
There are a large number of military aircraft from WWII up to the present day and a few from earlier years. There are also tanks, helicopters plus a model of the WWI era battleship, USS Pennsylvania and even a model of Atomic Annie, the 280mm Atomic Cannon that was designed to fire a 15 kiloton nuclear artillery shell. And before you ask, yes, the cannon was fired once with an atomic shell in May of 1953 in the Nevada desert.
If you are a modeler or would like to be and want to work on models with other veterans, Dan has offered to start a group at the Mellon Center. You can contact Dan here if you’re interested.
Lunch and Learn D-Day presentation this Friday, July 25th
On Friday, July 25, 2025 the Mellon Heritage Veterans’ and First Responders’ Outreach and Wellness Campus “Lunch & Learn” presentation will be presented by Doug Squeglia and Bill Welch. The presentation will be held at the Ridge Building, 16 West Division Street, North East, PA aboard the Mellon Heritage Veterans’ & First Responders’ Outreach and Wellness Campus. All Veterans, First Responders and their guests are invited to lunch at 11:30 a.m. The presentation will begin at noon.
In their presentation, they will be speaking on D-Day and those individuals from Erie County that were killed that day. Doug Squeglia retired from Parker Hannifin, formerly Lord Corporation. He has been researching the lives of all 732 names on the Erie World War II Memorial since 2015 and is getting close to completing the task. Bill Welch retired from Mercyhurst University. Mr. Squeglia and Mr. Welch are working together to include those biographies in a book about Erie County’s role in World War II from the homefront to those who served at home and abroad.
If you plan to attend, call/text 814-881-9215. This will help ensure there is enough food on-hand for lunch; however, RSVPs are not mandatory.
