There are a number of projects currently underway at the Mellon Veterans Outreach Center, but not many in our community are aware of what’s happening. I thought you might like a little inside information to show you things aren’t sitting still and after discussions with Richard Mellon and Dan Adamus, here’s what I found.
Chapel developments
As shown above, pews have been placed in the chapel to begin the process of returning it to use in a non-denominational format, potentially for weddings, funerals and various other functions. When the previous owners took possession from Mercyhurst, a lot of items had been removed, sometimes not very carefully, and it’s a work in progress to repair, refurbish and repurpose the interior. The stained glass windows were removed and the current plain windows still there need some repair, currently being planned. For those of you who remember when the chapel steeple was lit up at night, that, too is in the early stages, but the technology of exterior lighting has greatly advanced since the old lights were used and updates are necessary. There is even some thought of renewing the bells to chime on the hour.
Bookstore becoming museum
The old university bookstore behind the Miller Building is being converted to a military museum with a focus on local veterans whenever possible. Materials have been collected and are being sorted for display.
Military library
In the Ridge Library building, books are being collected and one room has been dedicated to those books and materials on everything to do with military history, the armed forces and topics important to veterans. These are currently being sorted and shelved.
Exercise facilities
The building across the parking lot from the Ridge Library building has a gym with weightlifting equipment which will be added to that will be accessible to veterans and first responders. There’s also a large room which will be used by the Ragin Raisins Wrestling Club. Plus, the Little Pickers youth football team is storing equipment at the center and has access to the field for practice.
Culinary Academy?
As noted before, there are four commercial kitchens plus a large dining area already in place. Celebrity chef, Robert Irvine is in talks to set up a culinary academy at the facility to train veterans to become chefs and how to run a restaurant.
Walking trails
On a portion of the property, walking trails are now being laid out which will be wonderful resource accessible to the entire community.
It’s always a concern when announcing projects underway, but not complete that unrealistic expectations can arise on timelines. At the same time, when a facility like the old Mercyhurst campus is being transformed into something that will be of immense benefit not only to veterans and their families and to first responders, but to the entire community as well, it’s important to keep the community informed.
When talking to Richard Mellon and Dan Adamus, they mentioned some other plans still in the very early stages and far too soon to list as in development, but it’s important for the North East community to be aware that many good things are going on and though you may not see outward signs as you walk or drive by, you can rest assured, progress is being made.
Just thought you would like to know.

This will be so very nice for Our Veterans who not only need this but deserve this place. Will the grotto outside house Mary once again? Would love to see that back in place too.
Sue Povich says
As someone who grew up less than a quarter mile from St. Mary’s and has lived out of town for decades, this is amazing news! There could not be a more deserving group than veterans. The multitude of ideas and plans is outstanding. Many thanks to all who spearheaded this and continue to see it through its different stages.
