The North East School District has cancelled classes today so crews can do snow removal all around the campus. Wouldn’t this be a great opportunity for some of the older students to help their elderly neighbors clear snow in their driveways? Maybe they could dig out some mailboxes so mail can be delivered. How about locating and clearing fire hydrants so our first responders can rapidly connect should the need arise?
Students don’t need an extra long holiday, instead, they can make use of this time to contribute to the community. If a few students work together, some of them could have a huge positive impact on the well being of those they help and they’ll feel good knowing they’re doing valuable and much appreciated work.
Just a thought.
UPDATE – Schools will be closed Wednesday 12-4 as well.

Spot on Paul. When I was a kid, I reveled when we had a snowstorm. It meant a potential for a little pocket change because I had a shovel and a strong back to help my neighbors out. I didn’t always get paid but always received a thank you, and a cup of hot chocolate, and sometimes a cookie or two. lol.
There are many requests for help on social media and apps like Nextdoor, but I don’t think many able-bodied high school students are responding to the plea for help.
