Classic Trains Magazine’s Summer 2024 issue, just out, has an interesting article for railfans in this area. It tells how Fairbanks-Morse got a little help from the local GE plant when they needed to build more locomotives, but didn’t have enough space at their factory in Wisconsin.
These older diesels from 1945, like the old EMD E and F units, just look better to me than today’s squared off designs, but since designer Raymond Loewy did the work, it’s not surprising. His designs for everything from automobiles to kitchen appliances were an example of how industrial machinery didn’t have to look bad to work well, but those were different days and different times.
Just wanted to point this out for you train buffs. There’s a lot of you around here.
