North East, PA — April 30, 2026 — The North East Community Marina Authority (NECMA) has been awarded a competitive boating facility grant from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) to replace and upgrade its aging courtesy docks—marking a major investment in public safety, accessibility, and Lake Erie boating infrastructure.
The project will remove decades-old dock sections that have exceeded their useful lifespan and replace them with more than 2,600 square feet of modern, ADA-supportive floating dock systems. The new docks will significantly improve safety and access for boaters, anglers, families, and individuals with mobility limitations at one of the marina’s busiest public access points.
“PFBC has consistently prioritized projects that expand safe, public access to Pennsylvania waterways, and this award reflects that shared commitment,” said Dr. Amy Burniston, Vice Chairman of the North East Community Marina Authority. “These new docks will transform the experience at our launch—making it safer, more efficient, and more accessible for everyone who relies on the marina.” The redesigned layout will improve vessel maneuvering near the public launch, provide safer side-tie staging for boaters, and enhance access for anglers entering and exiting small craft.
Building on Regional Momentum
This award comes on the heels of NECMA’s recent success in securing a multi-municipality grant through the Erie County Gaming Revenue Authority (ECGRA), further reinforcing regional investment in waterfront infrastructure and economic development. Together, these projects position the North East Marina as a critical hub for recreation, tourism, and community engagement along Pennsylvania’s Lake Erie shoreline.
Community Effort Driving Progress
In advance of the 2026 boating season, NECMA has also mobilized a strong volunteer effort to prepare the marina for increased use.
“Over the past several weeks, dedicated volunteers have spent countless hours refurbishing existing docks and preparing the facility for the season,” Burniston added. “This grant builds on that momentum and ensures their hard work is matched with long-term, sustainable improvements.”
Project Investment
The total estimated cost of the courtesy dock replacement project is $199,000, with PFBC grant funding supporting materials and NECMA providing matching funds for installation, labor, and site work.
Once completed, the project will deliver a durable, low-maintenance docking system designed to serve the public for years to come while meeting modern expectations for safety and accessibility.
