Two World War 2 bombers have been flying over North East for the past two days and will be doing so again tomorrow. I managed to grab my camera and catch a few quick photos of the B-17 which has passed by my house several times and the B-25 flew by this morning. If you are at all interested in aviation and vintage aircraft, keep your ears on high alert for any sounds of a propeller driven airplane overhead and look up at the sky. You might catch one or the other in the air.
North East is well positioned where quite a few uncommon aircraft fly by on occasion. You’ve likely seen the frequent appearances of a C-130 Hercules and the not too unusual passing of Apache helicopters, but I was lucky enough to catch Fifi, the B-29 Superfortress, one of only two still flying as it went by on it’s way to Buffalo for an airshow and a couple of years ago there was a Sikorsky Skycrane helicopter and a Boeing Chinook, too. More than a few aircraft going to and from Oshkosh, Wisconsin for their annual fly-in have flown over as well.
If you share my interest in aviation, pay attention to the skies this weekend. The B-17 and B-25 will be flying tomorrow hourly until 1:00PM and they do come out this way. If you’re outside at the right time or hear it approach, you’ll have the chance to see something you won’t often, if ever, see again over our town.
