Your may not be concerned about the southern border crisis with thousands of migrants crossing into the US every day because it seems so far away. Video of Texas towns being overrun and border patrol officers overwhelmed along with an administration in Washington openly promoting the whole process makes you glad you’re way up here in Pennsylvania.
North East will be a border town
Those border towns have declared a state of emergency, while we look forward to the coming of spring, mowing our lawns and watching the flowers and trees coming into bloom. Well buckle up, North East may become a border town, too. The politically motivated, engineered crisis at the southern border has generated such a surge of migrants that the government has decided to place them throughout the country, targeting towns in rural areas like North East and Granite Ridge seems to be on board with their plans to house unaccompanied children.
bilingual employees to fill a variety of positions including director of education, behavioral health clinician, youth care service professionals and supervisors, significant incident report specialists and directors and case managers to “support contracts with the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR).”
Granite Ridge deflects criticism by saying they have no definite plans for housing unaccompanied children and telling many of us they’ve signed no contract with the government, and they’re correct, it’s Culmen International that has the contract, Granite Ridge is simply a partner providing the facility to be used as an influx center for the ORR.
Do we want to follow Midland Texas?
In Midland, Texas, there’s an influx center, the kind of facility planned for Granite Ridge. An article describing their situation is titled, “Midland, Texas leaders blindsided by arrival of migrants at holding facility.” Sound familiar?
Another article interviewed residents and one said, “A week ago my house was worth $300K right now it’s worth zero, because of this detention facility.”
Is this the best we can do at Granite Ridge?
The property is a beautiful campus in the center of town and creating an influx center is the highest and best use? The Ehrenfeld companies said they wanted to have a “large economic impact …” by placing illegal immigrants in Granite Ridge? They likely will, unfortunately, the impact will be negative.
What can you do?
Everyone in North East needs to recognize what is happening here. Unless we all stand together and make it clear this is the wrong place for a facility like this, we’ll be seeing the busses arriving in short order. Our downtown will never be the same, the entire region will feel the negative impacts and we can watch as North East begins a downward spiral. Attend the May 11th meeting at Granite Ridge to inform yourself and to show them what the community thinks of their plans. North East deserves better.
